MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – A Madison woman will go to prison for two-and-a-half years, for letting a van hit and kill her young daughter.
A Dane County judge Monday sentenced 33-year-old Raya Hansen to the term the state recommended when she struck a plea deal last week, and pleaded guilty to fatal child neglect.
Judge William Hanrahan told Hansen the state’s sentencing recommendation was “exceedingly merciful,” considering her previous drug-related convictions and the gravity of her child’s death.
Prosecutors said Hansen was under the influence of drugs when she placed the child in a wheelchair that she used as a stroller, and walked to a drug store at 3:30 a.m. on Valentine’s Day of 2013.
The wheelchair rolled into a street, where it was hit by a van — and witnesses said Hansen didn’t move while it happened.
She apologized in court Monday. She’ll spend 10 years under extended supervision once she leaves prison.
