The Milwaukee Brewers have the best record in baseball with a week to go in spring training, improving to 18-8 after a 1-0 victory ove the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
Zach Davies scattered four hits in five innings to pick up the win. Brett Phillips provided the offense with a solo home run in the 4th. Milwaukee will play the Cubs on Friday and open the regular season next Thursday in San Diego.
The pitching staff however, took a couple of hits in Wednesday’s action. The most serious is a slight groin tear suffered by veteran left hander Wade Miley while field a bunt. Miley, a disappointment in Baltimore last season, had pitched very well for the Brewers this spring but he will now miss at least a month. Due a sizeable roster bonus this weekend, Miley may have to settle for a $100,000.00 retention bonus instead and rehab on the minor league level until he’s ready to return or he could be released outright in the hopes of re-signing him later.
Reliever Logan Boone also left Wednesday’s game after throwing only three pitches. He was diagnosed with a triceps strain and is expected to open the season on the disabled list.
