MILWAUKEE, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) The Milwaukee County Jail is connecting inmates with their mothers. Citizen Action of Wisconsin worked with phone-service provider CenturyLink to cover the costs of the calls on Mother’s Day.
A five-minute call from the jail usually costs $1.30. Inmates were allowed to call for free on Sunday.
The phone company was initially hesitant about the program, fearing the inmates might try to contact their victims or accomplices.
Inmates made more than 1,400 calls. Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt said it was the first time free phone calls were tried for Mother’s Day, and the program is likely to be repeated.
