MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The government shutdown isn’t expected to immediately impact students receiving federal financial aid to attend colleges and universities in the Madison area. A UW-Madison spokesman says most of the aid for the academic year has already been dispersed.
Around 700 of the 1,000 full-time Wisconsin National Guard employees will be furloughed. A weekend drill for guard members was canceled. Additional National Guard training is discontinued until Congress passes a new spending bill.
Federally funded research that is already underway at UW will not be impacted. Those research grants have already been funded. But no new research grants will be reviewed or processed by the federal government until the shutdown ends.
