MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) – The latest Navy ship built at Fincantieri Marinette Marine was launched Wednesday morning.
The future USS Indianapolis is the 17th littoral combat ship in the Navy’s fleet and is the ninth built in Marinette.
The ship had a christening ceremony on Saturday, but the launch was postponed because of the blizzard.
The ship’s sponsor, Jill Donnelly, wife of Indiana Sen. Joe Donnelly, christened the ship by breaking a champagne bottle over its bow.
When the ship is commissioned, it will be the fourth Navy ship to be named Indianapolis.
She will undergo additional outfitting and testing at Fincantieri Marinette Marine before her anticipated delivery next year.
