MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) Police in Milwaukee County are cracking down on speeding drivers.Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt says in just the past seven days, 246 tickets have been written from 216 traffic stops, with 169 of those tickets for speeding. Of the 169 tickets, 160 were written for drivers going at least 16-miles-per-hour above the speed limit; three for at least 36-miles-per-hour over.
There have been 31 traffic related fatalities in Milwaukee County so far this year.
The speeding crackdown isn’t over. The county says extra patrols are being paid for by a state grant, which includes no overtime for deputies. Squad cars are positioned along many crowded highways, with an emphasis on construction zones. The State Patrol is also backing the effort.
