EAU CLAIRE, WI (WSAU) The City of Eau Claire is following the lead of more than two dozen cities nationwide in renaming the Columbus Day holiday. The City Council passed a resolution Monday evening declaring the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the city.
The Eau Claire Board of Education also approved a similar resolution on the same night, to take effect for the next school year.
Dozens of people spoke in favor of the resolution at the meeting, while a few people were in favor of keeping Columbus Day and adding a separate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
