ODANAH, WI (WSAU) – A 14-year-old boy is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Odana. The Ashland County Sheriff’s Department says they received a 911 call on Wednesday afternoon about a male with a knife. A deputy responded to the call and used lethal force.
Reports say the boy was a 14-year-old who was a member of the Bad River Tribe. He was treated by first responders and then rushed to Memorial Medical Center in Ashland where he was pronounced dead. The boy’s name has not been released. It’s unclear what transpired before the shooting.
A knife has been recovered from the scene.
The Bad River Tribal Council issued a statement: “The Tribal Council is deeply saddened and troubled by today’s event, and they offer their condolences to the family at this time. This is an extremely hard day for everyone; in times like this the community must come together, and help each other heal.”
The Wisconsin Department of Justice will investigate the case. The deputy’s name has not been made public. The Bad River Tribe says the deputy involved in the case was also a tribal member.
