MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A pair of Northeast Wisconsin lawmakers want to make “governor’s tags” available to be raffled off for sturgeon spearing season.
State Reps. Gordon Hintz, D-Oshkosh, and David Murphy, R-Greenville, have introduced a bill that would make five sturgeon spearing licenses available for the group Sturgeon for Tomorrow.
The group would then raffle them off to raise money for sturgeon management.
The licenses would come out of the pool allocated to the upriver lakes of Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts.
Each year, the state Department of Natural Resources holds a lottery for the opportunity to purchase a license to spear on one of those lakes.
Hintz says an average of 13 lottery winners did not buy licenses between 2007 and 2013, and 16 licenses went unpurchased in each of the last two years.
He says this means there are enough to be held for raffle.
The Wisconsin Bear Hunters Association holds a similar raffle for bear hunting tags.
