MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – An overpayment error has cost the head of the Milwaukee County retirement system her job. Marian Ninneman has resigned after one retiree received an extra $140,000 from the county over several years.
County Executive Chris Abele says Ninneman had learned of the mistake three years ago and nothing was done to fix it. The problem was first uncovered by the county’s Risk Management Director, who reportedly informed Ninneman about it. At the time the overpayments had been ongoing for a year. Two years later Ninneman was reminded that the overpayments were continuing and still hadn’t been addressed.
Abele says even though the pensioner didn’t do anything wrong, that person is now being asked re-pay the overpayment back to the county.
The Milwaukee County Board discussed the issue in closed session last night, but did not take any further action.
The Milwaukee County Pension Fund has more than $1.5-billion in assets.
