Wednesday was National Signing Day when high school athletes autograph letters of intent to play sports collegiately.
The University of Wisconsin football program landed more than two dozen commitments which included several area prep standouts.
Among them, Aaron Vopal, a defensive lineman from De Pere High School who formalized his early commitment to play for the Badgers.
Two Kimberly Papermakers also signed letters of intent, quarterback Danny Vandenboom and Logan Bruss, one of four, in-state offensive linemen who signed. The others were Kayden Lyles of Middleton, Tyler Beach of Port Washington and Alex Fenton of Menomonie.
Green Bay Preble quarterback Coy Wanner signed as a preferred walk-on.
Head Coach Paul Chryst also landed a highly sought after wide receiver in Danny Davis of Springfield, Ohio who was recruited by several other Big Ten schools.
Other area athletes to sign letters were Matt Lorbeck, the state high school defensive player of the year. The Bay Port linebacker will attend Northern Illinois. His Bay Port teammate, offensive lineman Jake Hansen signed with Division II Minnesota-Duluth and Ashwaubenon quarterback Ryan Johnson signed with Northern Michigan.
