ELROY, WI (WSAU) The 3-year-old son of Elroy’s police chief shot and wounded himself on Monday night. The toddler reportedly got hold of a firearm belonging to Police Chief Tony Green.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting haven’t been made public. It’s being treated as an accident. It’s unclear if the firearm was the Chief’s service weapon or if it was a privately-owned gun.
The Juneau County Sheriffs Department got a 9-1-1 around 6pm last night, and arrived at the Chief’s home a short time later.
The boy was taken to Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston with non-life-threatening injuries.
Chief Green had been temporarily suspended for two months for an unrelated incident in 2015. He was at a party where alcohol was served to underage girls.
The sheriff’s department has requested that the State Department of Justice investigate the incident.
