FOND DU LAC, WI (WSAU) — A D.C. Everest graduate hopes to prove that anyone can accomplish what they set their mind to as Miss Wisconsin USA 2017.
Skylar Witte won the title and the responsibility on Sunday night in Fond Du Lac at 19 years old. Witte spent most of her childhood in Altoona before moving to the Everest district in her junior year of high school, something she attributes to her competitive edge and her drive to accomplish her goals.
“I had to start my modeling career from a very strange place. I don’t come from a family with a great deal of wealth, so I had to learn to make those connections and build my portfolio. All of those lessons combined really prepared me to compete,” said Witte.
“It’s a lot to have to pick up and move when you’ve been established and you know everybody, so I think that was the biggest start of my journey to get to this point. I was on the D.C. Everest Dance Team and I learned a lot about hard work and dedication, and what it takes to really make something happen.”
Witte wants to use her new title as a platform to prove that individuals can make their own success. On top of her duties, she’ll be managing a full course load at UW-Madison and continuing a modeling career in cities around the Midwest.
She said, “I want people to understand the power in creating those opportunities, setting goals for yourself, and reaching your dreams. My dream was to be Miss Wisconsin USA, and I made it happen. It’s something I want to spread to other people. Don’t let the pressures of the world get in your way.”
The new Miss Wisconsin USA will be making her first official appearance in a city where’s she’s a familiar face, Tomahawk. She’s worked as a waitress at a popular supper club in the community for the last few years.
“I will actually be in Tomahawk for the Fall Ride that’s happening this weekend. I’ll be there Saturday, late afternoon through evening, and possibly Sunday just attending,” said Witte.
Witte will represent Wisconsin in the Miss USA pageant, which does not have a date or venue selected as of yet.
