MADISON, WI (WSAU) – A Stevens Point doctor is being brought up on federal charges for planning to distribute Adderall.
51-year-old Margaret “Meg” Knowles of Amherst is charged with four counts of conspiring to distribute and possess with intent to distribute Adderall, which is a controlled substance used to treat ADHD and narcolepsy. She’s also charged with attempting to obtain the drug by fraud while practicing in Stevens Point.
The statement from U.S. Attorney John Vaudreuil (voh-DREE) alleges Knowles conspired with four other people from 2011 to 2014 to possess the drug outside of her practice and without a legitimate medical purpose. In May 2013, Knowles allegedly accessed a computer to create prescription orders for Adderall from other clinicians without their authorization.
The charges followed an investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. If convicted, Knowles faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison on each conspiracy count, and four years for the attempt to acquire a controlled substance by fraud count.
