ANTIGO, Wis. (WSAU) — We learned last Thursday that someone was in the right place to catch the Antigo school prom shooting incident on video, but don’t expect to see it. That from Wisconsin’s top law enforcement official, Attorney General Brad Schimel. Schimel says he’s supportive of open records requests and transparency, giving people the ability to be certain an officer’s shooting was justified, but he says there are some things the general public should not see. “It’s one thing to be monitoring the actions of the law enforcement officer. That’s a different situation. We’re certainly not going to conceal that from someone who wants to be able to examine whether the officer’s actions were reasonable, but we’re not going to put that in a form where it can be put up on the Internet.”
Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller confirmed that investigators will be able to watch some of the event, but declined to say if the video was from a witness, from a police vehicle camera, or from an officer’s body camera. The recording, and all other evidence, is being processed by the Division of Criminal Investigation’s new unit that deals with special situations including officer-involved shootings.
18-year-old Jakob Wagner was killed by an Antigo officer after he fired a hunting rifle, striking two prom goers leaving the school. The girl was treated and released at a nearby hospital. 18-year-old Collin Cooper was discharged from Aspirus Wausau Hospital Friday.
