OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin’s only spearing season for sturgeon is moving slowly on Lake Winnebago.
The DNR says only 60 fish were taken during the weekend, and the quotas on the state’s largest inland lake will probably not be reached by the time the maximum 16-day season closes next Sunday.
Spearing was shut down Friday on the lakes that are up the Fox River from Lake Winnebago, after the quota was reached for young females.
Biologist Ryan Koenigs says the mild weather over the weekend scared at least some people away, and many spearers say a lack of water clarity makes it tougher to see the large sturgeon move underwater.
This is the 10th day of the season, and the DNR says 632 fish have been taken so far — well below last year’s total of 2,158, in a season shut down after just 8 days.
