MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) – Milwaukee will be one of four U.S. cities in a pilot program to prevent painkiller and heroin abuse, and the violent crimes involved with those drugs.
The federal Drug Enforcement Administration has unveiled what it calls a “360 Degree Strategy” which focuses on prevention without extra law enforcement.
Special agent Dennis Wichern says it will educate the public about heroin and opioid abuse, encourage doctors to be more responsible in their prescriptions, and target gangs and other drug traffickers.
He says the pilot program will determine what works and doesn’t work, and it will build on anti-heroin abuse efforts already taking place at the state and local levels in Wisconsin.
The effort will cost $2 million and will operate in Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and West Memphis as well as Milwaukee.
