MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – State lawmakers are looking to make up for almost $58 million in cost overruns in eight programs.
The Joint Finance Committee is discussing the matter late Wednesday morning, after the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau put out the spending figures Tuesday.
Officials say the overruns will not affect the expected surplus in the state’s general fund of $135 million by the time the current budget period ends in mid-2017.
The state government’s “STAR” computer system, which consolidates older and separate agency networks, is $25 million over its budget — and officials say the overage will be covered by internal fees that the various departments pay toward the project.
Other spending overruns include $21 million at various institutions, and $15 million for outpatient programs at the state’s mental health facilities at Madison and Oshkosh.
