MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The Wisconsin Senate’s majority leader wants to prohibit county executives from serving in the state Legislature at the same time.
Republican Scott Fitzgerald is seeking co-sponsors for a bill to that effect.
Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris is running this fall for a Senate seat that’s being vacated by Fond du Lac Republican Rick Gudex — and Harris, a Democrat, says the bill is aimed directly at him.
Fitzgerald says it’s wrong for someone making $100,000 a year as a county executive from double-dipping with a $50,000 legislative salary.
But Harris says Fitzgerald stayed silent when his fellow Republican Paul Farrow held his Senate seat for a short time after becoming the Waukesha County executive — and former Assembly Democrat Bob Ziegelbauer kept that post for a time after being elected the Manitowoc County executive.
