ALLOUEZ, WI (WTAQ) – Community partners and municipal leaders in De Pere, Allouez and Brown County gathered Monday to announce a coordinated effort to fully fund plowing a section of the Fox River Trail.
Six miles of the paved trail would be plowed from Porlier Street in Green Bay to Heritage Road in De Pere.
A 3 mile portions of the Fox River Trail in Allouez is already cleared for people itching to exercise in the elements.
Brown County Parks Director Matt Kriese says talks of clearing the trail have come up annually for over a decade.
“So, over the course of the last 15 years since the trails been implemented, this topic has come up every year. In more recent time, this past summer, we really sat down with Allouez and they saw a need in their community.”
Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach says the cost of the snow removal will come from their trail fund.
“Each of the individual municipalities will dictate how they pull that money to fund it. Total cost right now, our contract we saw for 2017 is going to be roughly $21,000. So, it’s not a large amount to be able to take care of plowing this trail. I think we’ll learn a lot in 2017 that will give us more to go on for the 2018 budget,” said Streckenbach.
The goal is to encourage people to stay active during the winter.
The county board and municipalities need to vote on the proposal.
If it’s approved, plowing could begin at the beginning of the new year.
