WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Do you have a mercury based thermometer in your home? The Marathon County Health Department will give you a free digital thermometer in exchange for your mercury one. Not sure if your thermometer is mercury based?
Environmental Health Sanitarian with the Marathon County Health Department, Michelle Schwock, on how you can tell.
“A mercury-based thermometer will be silver in nature. The liquid in it will be silver. Whereas, the alcohol based thermometers will be red or blue,” she said.
Schwock also says they’ll take more than just thermometers.
Schwock said, “We will also take thermostats, maybe auto switches if somebody would happen to have them, or some liquid mercury that they find somewhere in their house, hopefully not, but if they do have it we’ll take it.”
You can take your mercury thermometer to the following locations and exchange them for a digital one free of charge:
