Instant success at UW Green Bay has earned Head Men’s Basketball Coach Linc Darner a quick two year extension on his contract. Athletic Director Mary Ellen Gillspie announced the deal Tuesday, in advance of the University’s major fundraising effort, the 16th annual Phoenix-Packers Steak Fry at the Lambeau Field Atrium.
Darner just completed his first season with the Phoenix, getting hired to replace Brian Wardle after leading Florida Southern to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Under Darner, the Phoenix deployed an untempo style of play that led to several single season records getting broken. The most steals, free throws attempted and made were among the highlights for a team that averaged more than 80 points a game.
Green Bay finished 23-13 on the year, they came in fourth in the Horizon League regular season but roared to the conference tournament title earning the automatic bid to the NCAA National Tournament. It was Green Bay’s first trip to the dance in 20 years.
The deal will keep Darner under contract through the 2021-22 season.
The Phoenix also announced it will continue it’s series with the University of Wisconsin. Green Bay is expected to play the Badgers again in the upcoming season in December at the Kohl Center in Madison.
