UNDATED (WHBL) — The deadline to file your taxes is less than a week away.
IRS Spokesman Christopher Miller says if you’ve been procrastinating, there’s still time to get those taxes done. “If you still haven’t filed your tax return, a fast, easy accurate way to take care of it is to use the IRS Free File programs.” You find a wide range of free programs to take care of your taxes online at www.irs.gov.
If you think you’re unable to file your taxes in time, Miller says you can file for an extension. He also says you won’t be alone in doing so. “In Wisconsin, the IRS expects to receive 126,000 extension requests this year, so a lot of people do choose that option.” Miller reminds you that filing for an extension on your return is not the same as filing an extension on paying taxes, but that if you are expecting to have some trouble making payments, you can contact the IRS and get payment plans worked out.
State revenue officials also point out that filing for an extension on your federal taxes will grant you an extension for your state taxes. You’ll just have to keep a copy of Form 4868 on record to send in at your time of filing.
