WEST SALEM, WI (WTAQ) – It’s been a year-and-a-half since law enforcement in Wisconsin has been allowed to use unmanned drones.
But only a few have employed them.
One of the latest is the West Salem Police in La Crosse County. Chief Charles Ashbeck says the drone technology can save lives, as aerial cameras provide images of searches, fires, and other disasters.
Officers can get an advance look at the dangers they face going into places like burning buildings. However, Ashbeck says it’s important for folks to know that officers won’t use the cameras to spy on them — and it’s “extremely important” that people know they can trust the agency.
West Salem Police first used a drone to record a two-block crime scene following the shooting death of a teen.
