SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ) – Some tense moments Thursday afternoon as emergency crews respond to a mercury spill.
It happened at the former Suamico Sewer Treatment Facility on Mink Ranch Road.
Just before noon, 5 employees were cleaning the unused facility when an unmarked vile, containing less than a half-ounce of mercury, accidentally fell through a box and hit the floor.
Suamico Fire Chief Troy Noe says the workers were wearing normal clothes and the spill splashed onto some of their pants.
Noe says the workers were decontaminated and there’s no serious concerns for their health. He says a cleaning operation at the facility will take place Friday.
