PLYMOUTH, WI (WTAQ) – 300 people will be laid off in January after Dairy Farmers of America announced Friday that it will close its plant in Plymouth.
According to a release, officials met with the plant’s workers and cited the facility’s dated infrastructure and technology as the reason for the shutdown.
“Business decisions that impact the lives of our employees are incredibly difficult,” said John Stephens, DFA’s chief operating officer, consumer brands. “This closure in no way is a reflection of our dedicated employees, who have done excellent work here.
“Unfortunately, despite numerous upgrades to this facility, it has become increasingly difficult for us to remain competitive in today’s marketplace,” Stephens said. “We appreciate the dedication of our employees here and will be working to help them through this transition.”
DFA officials say they will look into setting up a job fair and find ways to work with Wisconsin Rapid Response to find local job opportunities.
The Plymouth facility has been in operation since 1954 and produces Borden Cheese, as well as private-label cheese products.
