Linc Darner’s first win came against a Division II team, his second win will be much more memorable. The Green Bay Phoenix downed the Akron Zips 66-63 at the Resch Center Tuesday night for the new head coach. After giving up 100 plus points in two of their first three games, the Phoenix clamped down defensively and won with a gritty, half-court defense. Both teams had trouble hitting shots, Green Bay made just 32% from the floor, they hit only 2 of 13 three point shots and were an unsightly 20 of 37 from the free throw line. They still found a way by hounding Akron to 35% shooting and the out-rebounded the taller zips 52-45. Jordan Fouse pulled down a career high 16 boards including 9 of the 20 offensive rebonds on the night. Charles Cooper led the scoring with 14 points while Fouse added. Leading scorer Carrington Love struggled from the floor, making only 2 of 11 shots to finish with 8 points. The Phoenix trailed only briefly on three occassions and never by more than two points. Green Bay improves to 2-3 on the season. They’ll meet Eastern Illinois on the road on Saturday.
