ROTHSCHILD, WI (WTAQ) – The federal government needs to do better in addressing homelessness in colder and rural areas of Wisconsin.
That’s what U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro was told Monday at a conference in Rothschild.
He appeared at the 3rd annual Hunger and Homeless Summit put on by Wausau House Republican Sean Duffy, to help groups which help the less fortunate in central and northern Wisconsin.
Duffy says policies that work in warmer climates don’t often work in the Badger State, where it gets below-zero in the winter. He says many residents help the homeless who travel from “sofa to sofa” — but homeless shelters don’t get federal aid to serve those people.
Duffy also says rural areas need more access to services for homeless veterans, like vouchers he says are not good north of Wausau.
