WESTFIELD, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin’s first monkey sanctuary is being planned for the Westfield area.
Primates Incorporated has received a donation of $50,000 to open a facility for research monkeys once they’ve done their service.
The group owns 17 acres in the Marquette County town of Springfield, where the monkeys would live in both indoor and outdoor settings. The group is raising a half-million dollars, and the fund drive is at its halfway point.
The facility could open in the next 1 to 2 years.
Amy Kerwin started Primates Incorporated after working in the UW-Madison Primate Lab. She tells the Portage Daily Register there’s a need for a sanctuary after she worked with 97 monkeys at the UW, and learned there were not any plans to retire them.
