MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Former Dane County sheriff’s deputy Andrew Steele was committed to a mental institution Friday, for killing his wife and sister-in-law last August.
A jury ruled last month that the 40-year-old Steele was not guilty by insanity in the shootings of Ashlee Steele and Kacee Tollefsbol last August.
Circuit Judge Nicholas McNamara said Steele remains a threat to himself and others, because of the ALS he contracted two months before the shootings. The jury ruled that Lou Gehrig’s disease was a factor in the incidents.
Friday, Steele told the court he agrees he should be institutionalized — and he did not know how the shootings came about. He apologized to the victims’ families, calling Ashlee his “soul mate” and her and Kacee two of the greatest people “to walk the earth,” and two of the best friends he ever had.
The judge said his commitment order should be revisited from time to time.
