WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU-Wheeler News) Central Wisconsin has a growing number of worshippers who are Muslim — and a second mosque is being planned to accommodate those people. The Islamic Society of Central Wisconsin has bought a building in the Wausau area. It’s raising funds to remodel the structure, in the hopes of finishing the project within two years.
The location would be near Wausau Aspirus Hospital and the Marshfield Clinic on Wausau’s west side.
The group’s first mosque, Masjid Al-Noor, opened nine years ago in Marshfield. It has about 15 families from throughout north central Wisconsin as regular members.
The society’s general secretary, Adeel Aslam, says about 30 Muslim families live in the Wausau region — and a second mosque would also attract more members from Stevens Point northward. Aslam tells the Wausau Daily Herald it’s been difficult for many Muslim families to travel to Marshfield and elsewhere to attend prayer services.
