MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) – The Wisconsin Assembly’s finance chairman says he agrees that the Justice Department should have more resources to investigate shooting deaths by police officers.
Marinette Republican John Nygren issued a statement on that support Friday, before his Joint Finance Committee started hearing testimony in Milwaukee on the proposed state budget.
Governor Scott Walker’s package did not include the funding sought by the state Justice Department. It wanted almost $740,000 for three investigators and two analysts.
After the recent police shootings in Madison and Kenosha, the Republican Walker said he would be willing to help the Justice Department increases its resources.
Nygren said he has a duty to ensure that officer-involved deaths are investigated with integrity.
A state law adopted last year requires police agencies to have an outside agency investigate their officer-involved deaths — and many are having the Justice Department perform that task.
