MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Governor Scott Walker’s office says it’s willing to work with lawmakers and others on an alternative plan to help get a new arena built for the Milwaukee Bucks.
That’s after Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said the Republican governor’s budget proposal would not pass.
Walker’s budget has the state borrowing $220 million for a new downtown Milwaukee arena — and it would be paid back with income taxes from expected increases in NBA player salaries.
Walker’s office pointed out that if an arena is not built, taxpayers would have to cover over $100 million.
Friday, business group leaders and the “Save Our Bucks” group met at Alverno College, where the Legislature’s finance panel was holding a hearing on the budget. They said the new arena would revitalize the downtown, create jobs, and preserve Milwaukee’s reputation as a major league city.
