WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) — The driver that led several police officers on a high speed chase Tuesday was in court Wednesday.
58-year-old Randall G. Wilson of Clintonville is charged with fleeing an officer while operating a vehicle, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. He took the black GMC Yukon from a Clintonville dealership and led several police agencies on a high speed chase. The chase ended in Rib Mountain next to the Highway 51 northbound on ramp from Rib Mountain Drive.
Assistant District Attorney Desiree Toldt says Wilson made his initial appearance before Judge Greg Huber. “Bond was set in this case, as well as defense counsel requested a competency hearing.”
The defense requested a signature bond, but Judge Greg Huber didn’t allow that. Instead, he set a $50,000 dollar cash bond with orders not to drive if he posts bond. Toldt requested a high cash bond. “I do believe the bond that the judge set was appropriate in this case. That would have been the amount the state would have been asking for. Given the fact that Mr. Wilson does have a criminal history in both Wyoming and Oregon, and just due to the nature of the offenses themselves.”
Huber also ordered a competency evaluation to be completed before Wilson’s next court appearance, which is a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 25th at 11:15 a.m. Wilson must also take his medication as previously ordered by his doctor.
Wilson’s attorney told the court his client has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
According to court documents, Wilson told officers he heard voices on the radio that told him to keep going. He claimed he was going home, which he claimed was in South Dakota near his mother with the Oglala Sioux nation.
The vehicle was heavily damaged during the high speed chase. We have one of many Marathon County Sheriff’s Department squad car videos posted, which can be seen by clicking on the image above. (Note: Video contains some profanity.)
