The Green Bay Phoenix Women’s basketball team learned it’s draw in the NCAA Division 1 Tournament Monday night and the Horizon League regular season and tournament champions have drawn the only undefeated team in the field, the Princeton Tigers of the Ivy League. Green Bay is the number 9 seed in the Spokane Regional and will play Princeton, the 8 seed, Saturday morning at 10:00 AM in College Park, Maryland. Green Bay is making it’s 15th NCAA appearance after compiling a 28-4 record, inlcuding Sunday’s 86-77 overtime victory against Wright State in the conference tournament championship game. Princeton is 33-0 on the season, champions of the Ivy and ranked 13th in the country. The Green Bay squad, seated on a center court stage at the Kress Events Center in front of about 200 fans, leaped for joy when their name was called in the final bracket announced on the ESPN selection show. The winner of the game will likely have to play the region’s top seed, Big Ten regular season and tournament champion Maryland on the Lady Terrapins home court next Monday. The last time Green Bay was a 9 seed, the won their first round game against 8th seeded New Mexico 59-52 in the 2007 tournament. Green Bay then lost to top ranked Connecticut 94-70 in the second round. This won’t be the first trip to College Park either. In 2005, Green Bay was seeded 10th and lost in the first round to 7th seeded Maryland 65-55. Head Coach Kevin Borseth said the trip was even more memorable because the team bus broke down upon arriving in Washington D.C., leaving them stranded for over two hours before the Maryland team bus came to the rescue.
