BAYFIELD, WI (WTAQ) – Southeast Wisconsin has been hit the hardest so far during Tuesday morning’s snowstorm.
The National Weather Service said Franksville in Racine County had 5 inches starting around 2:30 a.m. — and by mid-morning, it switched to sleet. Kenosha also reported 5 inches by the middle of the morning. Milwaukee picked up around 2 inches.
1 to 3 inches fell in about the western third of Wisconsin. That includes the Bayfield area, where the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore says it will temporarily close access to the Lake Superior ice caves starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
With snow covering the two-mile ice walkway from Meyers Beach, park staffers say they must re-check the ice conditions before letting folks walk there again. As a result, the ice caves will be closed Wednesday — but they could re-open on Thursday.
Visitors are asked to check the National Lakeshore’s Facebook page, or call a hotline for more information. Here’s that number — (715) 779-3397, extension 3.
As for the forecast, the snow was expected to taper off Tuesday afternoon in much of Wisconsin.
Cold conditions and patchy blowing snow are in the forecast for Tuesday night, with lows down to minus-10 in the north and wind chills getting down to 25-below in some spots.
