OAK CREEK, Wis (WSAU-Wheeler News) A flag maker in suburban Milwaukee says it will no longer produce and sell the Confederate flag. Eder Flag Manufacturing of Oak Creek announced the action yesterday. It was in response to last week’s church murders in Charleston South Carolina, in which defendant Dylann Roof was seen in photos holding the Confederate flag.
The flag company said its late owner, Eugene Eder, “fought in World War Two against the forces of bigotry, hatred, and tyranny.” There’s been a national debate over the flag’s usage since the shootings that killed nine people.
Walmart, Amazon, and e-Bay are among the merchandisers that have promised to stop selling the flags.
On Monday South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley called for the Confederate flag’s removal from the statehouse grounds. Mississippi has talked about doing the same thing. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a likely Republican White House candidate, said he supported Haley’s action and said states should make their own choices in the matter.
