BELOIT, WI (WTAQ) – It might be awhile before we learn why the Beloit police chief and his top deputy are on paid leave.
City Manager Lori Luther said Tuesday she’s interviewing new firms to conduct an internal investigation of the Beloit police force.
Luther originally arranged to have the Chicago-based firm of Hillard-Heintze conduct the probe. But concerns were raised about possible bias, after the same firm conducted a review which put Police Chief Norm Jacobs and Deputy Chief Tom Dunkin on leave 8 days ago.
Luther said Tuesday she’s looking for an investigating firm that would be “completely independent” of the police department and the previous review process. No one has said why Jacobs and Dunkin were sidelined.
Media reports have said the two are under pressure due to employee morale issues and Beloit’s recent rise in homicide and other violent crimes.
The results of the new probe will be given to the city’s Fire and Police Commission, which will determine any possible discipline.
