HOUGHTON COUNTY, MI (WTAQ) – A sheriff in Upper Michigan is getting some heat, after an inmate ran away while he was being escorted back to jail from a court appearance.
John Saatio fled to Wisconsin after he got away last Friday.
Authorities said he apparently stole a car which had its keys inside — and he drove to Green Bay before running out of gas. The vehicle was recovered by Green Bay police last Saturday.
Saatio was charged with home invasion in the U.P., and he’s on Michigan’s sex offender registry due to a conviction elsewhere.
Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean has been getting some criticism on social media for letting the escape happen — but he says such an incident is extremely rare.
