MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Spectrum Brands of Middleton is being sued by the federal government, after a former subsidiary allegedly waited too long to report a problem with a coffee pot handle.
According to the lawsuit, Black and Decker Spacemaker coffee pots sold from 2008 through 2012 had handles that could detach — thus causing a risk of burns.
1,600 consumer complaints were reportedly filed in just over 3 years, before Applica Consumer Products told the government about the problem and recalled the coffee pots.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s lawsuit is against both Spectrum and Applica.
On its Web site, David Prichard of Spectrum said the firm would defend the lawsuit in court.
