KENOSHA, WI (WTAQ) – The Kenosha County sheriff says things are getting better at two farms where authorities found 82 dead calves last month.
Both farms are owned by the Schmeckel family in the towns of Paris and Brighton.
Sheriff Dave Beth has a farm nearby — and he’s caring for 15 calves that were rescued last month. He said the smaller animals have shown signs of improvement, and conditions at the two farms have become satisfactory since the rescues.
Beth and sheriff’s detectives plan to meet with prosecutors this week to discuss further action in the animal abuse probe.
Officials said the family has been cooperative during the cleanup work — and the Schmeckels have sold off some cattle to other farmers to reduce the size of their herd.
