WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) – We’re learning more about which turkey farms are most likely to catch the avian flu.
A USDA follow up study says 12 to 16-week-old turkeys are most likely to get the H5 virus.
Farms are generally following bio-security measures — but bacteria from people, vehicles, and buildings could be bringing in the disease. The conclusions come from a study of 81 Upper Midwest turkey farms by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
About half the infected turkeys were at least midway through their normal life cycle of 12 to 22 weeks — so extra vigilance may be necessary for middle-aged birds and older.
The USDA also says farm visitors and employees should spray their vehicle tires with disinfectants before entering — and wear disposable boot covers and rodent control.
Wisconsin had 10 bird flu cases this spring at turkey and chicken farms. Neighboring Minnesota and Iowa had dozens more.
Director Steve Olson of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association says it’s clear that younger birds are not getting sick.
