MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin dairy cows pumped out a record amount of milk for June, while the national year-to-year increase was the smallest since October of 2012.
New federal figures show that Wisconsin made 2.4 billion pounds of milk last month, 3.4 percent more than the same month a year ago. The national output was 17.4 billion pounds, up 0.7 percent.
California, the nation’s top milk producer, continues to suffer from a long extensive drought. The Golden State made almost 3.4 billion pounds in June, down by 4.3 percent from June of 2014.
Wisconsin increased its dairy herd by 8,000 cows to around 1.28 million. Production per cow rose 50 pounds, to 1,880.
For the second quarter of the year, Wisconsin’s milk production jumped 3.8 percent compared to a national rise of 1.4.
