MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) – About 150 people attended a congressional hearing in Milwaukee on the city’s school voucher program — and why the Justice Department is still investigating it after four years.
Senate Governmental Affairs Committee chairman Ron Johnson said people have a right to know why the probe is taking so long, and why no conclusions have come out.
Much of Monday night’s testimony focused on the successes of Milwaukee’s nearly quarter-century old voucher program.
Investigators are reportedly trying to find out whether disabled students run into discrimination, when they fail to be admitted into the program that gives tax funded vouchers to kids to attend private schools.
Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican, has said the probe is the result of opposition to voucher programs by the Obama White House.
Disability rights’ advocates say Johnson’s interest in the probe is driven by political pressure from voucher school lobbyists.
