MILWAUKEE (WSAU-Wheeler News) The head of the Milwaukee County transit union has apologized for its recent three-day strike. However, James Macon told reporters early this morning that more walk-outs could take place. About 750 bus drivers and mechanics were out from Wednesday through early Saturday — the busiest time of year in downtown Milwaukee, when hundreds of thousands attended Summerfest and the city’s July Third fireworks show.
The union was working without a contract since April. Federal mediation took place last week, which failed to settle the two sides’ disagreements over worker pay and the county’s efforts to hire part-timers. Milwaukee County said it acted fairly and granted concessions.
As a favor to the local riders, the bus system announced free rides for today. It will cost the county up to $70,000.
