MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin farmers have planted record amounts of soybeans this year — plus more corn.
The USDA said the Badger State put 1.9 million acres of soybeans into their fields, about 100,000 more than the year before.
Corn remains the state’s top crop for food, fuel for ethanol, and other uses. 4.1 million acres of corn were planted in Wisconsin this past spring — again, about 100,000 more acres than in 2014.
The state also has about 1.66 million acres of hay, much of which is used to feed our state’s famous dairy cows.
Farmers also put in more acres for oats and potatoes. Winter wheat acreage is down by more than 10 percent. The barley crop is also down slightly.
Dry edible beans have about the same acreage as the previous year.
