STEVENS POINT, WI (WTAQ) – A judge is expected to decide today whether a central Wisconsin man is mentally able to help with his own defense on charges of killing his estranged wife.
58-year-old Larry Sanchez of Bancroft recently underwent a competency exam, after he was charged in the shooting death of his wife Lisa on June 3rd at his home.
Portage County authorities said Sanchez was drunk when killed his wife, and then held police at bay for over four hours. Officers had to use tear gas and pepper spray to force him out of his residence.
Circuit Judge Thomas Flugaur is expected to rule on Sanchez’ mental competency to defend charges of intentional and reckless homicide, being legally drunk in committing a homicide with a firearm, and not complying with officers.
