(WNFL)- Green Bay Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy vows to learn from the team’s crushing NFC Championship loss at Seattle. At his season-ending news conference yesterday, McCarthy said it’s the “mindset of a champion” for a team to learn not only from its defeats but also its victories. He said next year’s team will not “bear the burden” of what happened this past season or any time before that. The coach said the front office is about to look at every job description and performance including his and then make changes. Special teams have been targeted by the fans after two of the more visible mistakes against the Seahawks allowing Seattle’s fake field goal for a touchdown, and botching the on-side kick late in regulation of the ‘Hawks 28-22 overtime win. McCarthy said special teams are no different than the offense-and-defense, in that the Packers need to have “healthy schemes” and exploit their match-ups. He said the special teams’ mistakes have been more critical because of their timing during games. McCarthy met with reporters a week later than he planned, following the death of his brother Joe last Wednesday. He said coaches would have the week off before getting their exit interviews for last season. Then the Packers will focus on the draft and free agency. McCarthy pointed to free agent defenders Julius Peppers and LeTroy Guion as players he’d like to keep. The team must also decide whether to re-up with homegrown free agents like Randall Cobb and Bryan Bulaga.
