KENOSHA, WI (WTAQ) – It was put off for a year. Now, the state is running out of time to complete its review of a casino proposed to be built in Kenosha.
The deadline for a decision on the $800 million off-reservation project is a month from Monday.
The Menominee Tribe wants to build it on the site of the former Dairyland Greyhound Park. Federal officials have already signed-off on the idea.
Now, it’s up to Governor Scott Walker and he has been reviewing the plans for nearly 18 months.
The strongest opposition has come from the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe. They say approval for the Kenosha casino could cost them tens of millions of dollars at their own casino about 50 miles away.
The Potawatomi want the state to make up the losses, but the Bureau of Indian Affairs has rejected that idea.
