WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) – The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs has rejected an agreement which called for the Forest County Potawatomi to be reimbursed by the state for any losses at its Milwaukee casino should another casino open in Kenosha.
Governor Scott Walker still has until February 19 to approve or deny the proposed off-reservation casino the Menominee Nation wants to open.
The Potawatomi plans to sue, saying the courts should reinstate the deal which would force the state of Wisconsin to pay them $100 million if the Hard Rock project moves forward. The Menominee Nation has been working on a casino project near the border with Illinois for more than 20 years.
Right now, the Potawatomi casino is the only one in the region and it is one of the most profitable in the Midwest.
